Polaroid Development Lab

Film & Photography — Hologram interactive shader collection

Polaroid Development Lab simulates the chemical development process of Polaroid instant film — from the initial milky-white opacifier state through gradual image emergence as chemical reagents spread and react. The shader faithfully recreates the distinctive characteristics of integral film development.

The development process begins with an opaque titanium dioxide opacifier layer that gradually clears in a non-uniform pattern. Individual color channels emerge at different rates (channel stagger), mimicking how cyan, magenta, and yellow dye layers develop at different speeds in real Polaroid chemistry. The effect includes color grading shifts characteristic of different film stocks, light leak artifacts from imperfect pod burst, and the warm color cast typical of SX-70 and 600 film.

Users can upload their own images or use the webcam to snap a photo, then watch it develop in real-time. A chemistry mode reveals the underlying layer-by-layer development process.
